Group of Pansapa Dong Luang

Wiang Nong Long
The ‘Pan Sa Pa’ group of Ban Dong Luang is one of the outstanding creative communities in Wiang Nong Long District, Lamphun Province. They preserve the traditional Lanna pottery craftsmanship with both delicacy and contemporary style, characterized by a unique identity that reflects the gentle, simple, and beautiful way of Northern life.

“Pan Sa-Pa” is a Northern Thai phrase meaning “able to craft anything.” It refers to a unique local clay-sculpting tradition of Lamphun and serves as the signature style of Adul Chueajit, the master clay artisan and founder of the “Pan Cha-Pa” group in Ban Dong Luang, Wiang Nong Long District, Lamphun Province. Their hallmark creation is the handmade terracotta doll, a charming representation of Lanna life and culture. Each Pan Cha-Pa clay doll features a distinctive look: a slightly tilted head, gently closed eyes, and a soft, serene smile expressing the Lanna virtues of humility, grace, and gentleness, modeled after the demeanor of traditional Lanna women. The terracotta dolls from Ban Dong Luang are crafted using local clay and ancient techniques, including traditional surface glazing and old-style firing methods. These practices preserve the authenticity and cultural value of the craft. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Pan Cha-Pa clay dolls beautifully portray scenes of Lanna lifestyles across different eras, showcasing intricate details of traditional Lanna attire. A point of pride for the group is that their designs especially the clothing of various ethnic groups depicted in the sculptures have even been adapted and developed into OTOP fashion items, extending Lanna heritage into modern creative work.
